Immediately following there will be a luncheon for all Veterans, Active Duty Military and their families in the Rock Gym. We look forward to seeing you and honoring you as we celebrate Veterans Day.

If you are a Veteran or have family members or friends who have served or are currently serving in the military, we want your/their picture to be included in our slideshow. We will scan the picture and return it to you or you can email the pictures to pgrimes@bairdisd.org . Please include name, rank, branch of service and where they served. Please help us get the word out so we don’t miss anyone. (We would appreciate having the pictures no later than November 7th to allow us time for production.)

Technology Tips

It's been a busy few weeks, so two parent tech tip alerts have been issued for this week.

A graphic with the text 'NAVALERT' and a phone displaying a Snapchat chat interface.

Snapchat AI Filter

A new AI-powered Snapchat filter is trending among teens. This feature allows users to type a command and instantly generate realistic photos of people doing whatever is being described — even if those people never posed for the image or gave permission.

While many teens experiment out of curiosity, others have already used it in concerning ways. At Byron High School in Illinois, administrators recently addressed an incident where students used the filter to create fake, inappropriate images of their peers.

This situation is an important reminder for all families: AI-generated images can look real, spread quickly, and cause real harm.

A What Parents/Guardians Should Know
  • How It Works: Snapchat’s new “Imagine Lens” feature uses artificial intelligence to create photo-like images based on text prompts (TechRadar).
  • Privacy Risks: Allows anyone to generate fake images of another person without their consent.
  • Cyberbullying Potential: Fake images can be used to embarrass or target others, even if not widely shared.
  • Confusion Between Real & Fake: Teens may struggle to tell what’s real online, especially in emotionally charged situations.
  • Data Concerns: Snapchat’s “My Selfie” tool can use personal images for ads unless settings are adjusted (The Verge).
n What Parents/Guardians Can Do
  • Check Privacy Settings: Go to Snapchat → Settings → My Selfie → Ads and turn off permissions that use your or your child’s likeness.
  • Set Clear Boundaries: Explain the why behind each boundary so your child learns to make safe, thoughtful choices even when you’re not there to supervise.
  • Encourage Reporting: If your child sees something inappropriate or harmful, remind them to report it to a trusted adult and to contact Snapchat directly.
  • Promote Integrity Online: Talk about using technology responsibly and respectfully — even when joking or experimenting with new features is tempting.

Adult Content on ChatGPT

OpenAI announced it will soon allow erotica and other mature content on ChatGPT for verified adult users, as part of a new age-gating system launching in December. CEO Sam Altman says this aligns with the company’s goal to “treat adult users like adults.”

The update follows a wave of feedback about recent ChatGPT changes. After briefly making GPT-5 the default model, OpenAI reintroduced GPT-4o due to user preference for its more personable tone.

Altman also addressed mental health concerns, noting that ChatGPT had been made more restrictive to protect users but that the company now has better tools to detect distress. OpenAI has formed a new “Well-Being and AI Council” to guide responses to sensitive issues — though some experts have criticized the lack of suicide prevention specialists on the panel.

Parents should be aware that even with new age restrictions, tech-savvy kids can often find ways around verification systems. This is a timely reminder to talk with children about appropriate online behavior and to monitor how they engage with AI tools.

Technology Tips

Image about cyberbullying with a person looking sad and a phone with negative comments.

Barstool - Fueling Cyberbullying

Anonymous “Barstool” social media accounts are sparking alarm across Central Texas schools, with parents and educators warning they’re fueling a wave of cyberbullying and student harm.

These are unofficial, student-run Instagram pages often posing as school sports accounts, but have become platforms for targeting peers. Central Texas school leaders call the trend “extremely concerning,” and lawmakers say it’s part of a statewide, and even national, crisis tied to rising youth depression, anxiety, and suicide.

While the Texas Legislature considers age restrictions on minors’ access to social media, officials urge families not to wait. Parents are encouraged to watch for changes in behavior, keep open communication, and consider whether their children should be online.

Meta says it’s adding protections for youth accounts and exploring school partnerships to flag harmful content more quickly, but for now, the best defense is strong parental awareness and early action.

Technology Tips

A graphic with the TikTok logo and text about a challenge.

TikTok Challenges Can Have Big Consequences

Law enforcement officials in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, have charged two young drivers in connection with dangerous TikTok challenge videos that led to devastating outcomes.

June 1, 2025: 17-year-old David Nagy was killed while riding on a table tied upside down to the back of a car. The driver allegedly whipped the table into a parked vehicle while filming for social media, causing fatal head injuries. That driver is now facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

March 18, 2025: In a separate incident, a 19-year-old woman allowed a friend to “car surf” on the trunk of her vehicle while attempting another challenge. The passenger was thrown from the car and suffered a permanent brain injury. The driver has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault by vehicle.

Officials stressed that these incidents are a sobering reminder of how quickly a social media stunt can turn deadly, leaving lasting harm for everyone involved.

Parents are encouraged to use this story as an opportunity to talk with their teens about the risks of online challenges. Remind them that while many videos may look entertaining, these stunts can lead to irreversible injury or even death.

Family Discussion Questions:
  • Why do you think some teens feel pressure to try online challenges?
  • If you saw friends attempting a risky stunt, what could you do to help them stay safe?
  • How can we work together as a family to make good choices online and offline?

Whistle Stop Pocket Park Revealed

This year, four of our outstanding Baird High School students — PJ Luper, Kyera Byars, Brooklyn Manasco, and Kendell Miller — worked under the mentorship of Gloria Dayton and Lori Higgins to complete a project that will have a lasting impact on our community.

Through the TMCN Leadership Program, these students gave their summer, their energy, and their hearts to create a new Whistlestop Pocket Park downtown. Their work not only provided a safe outdoor space for the Little Bear Learning Academy but also strengthened childcare access for families, which is vital to the growth of Baird schools, businesses, and our community as a whole.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to the students and their families, our mentors and leaders, and all the sponsors and supporters who invested in this project. Your dedication helps make Baird an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

Whistlestop Pocket Park Reveal

The Texas Midwest Community Network (TMCN) has a Leadership program that connects high school students with mentors and community leaders during the student’s junior year carrying on through their senior year.

A student or group of students will have the opportunity to undertake and complete a significant project within their community and compete for a cash prize that can be used towards college, trade school, or to start a business. Students will have the opportunity to be mentored equipped with the leadership skills needed for tomorrow, and given an inside look as to how much of a difference one can make within a community.

The City of Baird is proud to mentor these students as they present their community project in front of selected judges for their chance to win prizes and recognition at the annual TMCN Leadership Conference in October 2025.

This year’s group of (now) Seniors heard the town Daycare was in desperate need of a new outdoor playground area. By law they are required to provide an outdoor space. The location of the daycare is in the downtown business district and has no outside space therefore the Little Bear Learning Academy is leasing a space from a homeowner across the alley. Clint and Shauna McArthur (the current owners of the daycare) stated they had out grown their current playground area. This left the McArthur’s no choice but to start looking at possibly moving to another location or maybe even leaving the city of Baird.

The students were presented with this problem and wanted to help keep the only daycare in town. With the help from the City of Baird and both economic development boards a lot was purchased next to the daycare. It was decided this space would serve the community and the daycare. The front section of the lot will be open to the public as a “pocket park” or "community park" and the back part will be leased to the daycare for a small fee allowing the McArthur’s to stay in Baird.

This project will be completed next week and we would love for you to join us for the Reveal on Friday, Oct. 3rd at 10:00am. Please help us recognize these students for their dedication and hard work in completing this amazing project!
