TikTok Challenges Can Have Big Consequences

Law enforcement officials in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, have charged two young drivers in connection with dangerous TikTok challenge videos that led to devastating outcomes.

June 1, 2025: 17-year-old David Nagy was killed while riding on a table tied upside down to the back of a car. The driver allegedly whipped the table into a parked vehicle while filming for social media, causing fatal head injuries. That driver is now facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

March 18, 2025: In a separate incident, a 19-year-old woman allowed a friend to “car surf” on the trunk of her vehicle while attempting another challenge. The passenger was thrown from the car and suffered a permanent brain injury. The driver has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault by vehicle.

Officials stressed that these incidents are a sobering reminder of how quickly a social media stunt can turn deadly, leaving lasting harm for everyone involved.

Parents are encouraged to use this story as an opportunity to talk with their teens about the risks of online challenges. Remind them that while many videos may look entertaining, these stunts can lead to irreversible injury or even death.

Family Discussion Questions:
  • Why do you think some teens feel pressure to try online challenges?
  • If you saw friends attempting a risky stunt, what could you do to help them stay safe?
  • How can we work together as a family to make good choices online and offline?

Whistle Stop Pocket Park Revealed

This year, four of our outstanding Baird High School students — PJ Luper, Kyera Byars, Brooklyn Manasco, and Kendell Miller — worked under the mentorship of Gloria Dayton and Lori Higgins to complete a project that will have a lasting impact on our community.

Through the TMCN Leadership Program, these students gave their summer, their energy, and their hearts to create a new Whistlestop Pocket Park downtown. Their work not only provided a safe outdoor space for the Little Bear Learning Academy but also strengthened childcare access for families, which is vital to the growth of Baird schools, businesses, and our community as a whole.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to the students and their families, our mentors and leaders, and all the sponsors and supporters who invested in this project. Your dedication helps make Baird an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

Whistlestop Playground Reveal

An announcement for the Whistle Stop Pocket Park reveal, featuring a mural of a tree and swing.

Whistlestop Pocket Park Reveal

The Texas Midwest Community Network (TMCN) has a Leadership program that connects high school students with mentors and community leaders during the student’s junior year carrying on through their senior year.

A student or group of students will have the opportunity to undertake and complete a significant project within their community and compete for a cash prize that can be used towards college, trade school, or to start a business. Students will have the opportunity to be mentored equipped with the leadership skills needed for tomorrow, and given an inside look as to how much of a difference one can make within a community.

The City of Baird is proud to mentor these students as they present their community project in front of selected judges for their chance to win prizes and recognition at the annual TMCN Leadership Conference in October 2025.

This year’s group of (now) Seniors heard the town Daycare was in desperate need of a new outdoor playground area. By law they are required to provide an outdoor space. The location of the daycare is in the downtown business district and has no outside space therefore the Little Bear Learning Academy is leasing a space from a homeowner across the alley. Clint and Shauna McArthur (the current owners of the daycare) stated they had out grown their current playground area. This left the McArthur’s no choice but to start looking at possibly moving to another location or maybe even leaving the city of Baird.

The students were presented with this problem and wanted to help keep the only daycare in town. With the help from the City of Baird and both economic development boards a lot was purchased next to the daycare. It was decided this space would serve the community and the daycare. The front section of the lot will be open to the public as a “pocket park” or "community park" and the back part will be leased to the daycare for a small fee allowing the McArthur’s to stay in Baird.

This project will be completed next week and we would love for you to join us for the Reveal on Friday, Oct. 3rd at 10:00am. Please help us recognize these students for their dedication and hard work in completing this amazing project!

Baird ISD - Campuses in Secure posture

Posted Date: 9/11/25 (11:28 AM)

Baird ISD has placed all campuses in a SECURE posture this morning. This means that all exterior doors are locked, and students and staff are remaining inside the building. Classes are continuing as normal.

The reason for this action is that Clyde ISD has placed its campuses on lockdown due to anonymous threats received. Baird ISD has not received any threats, and we have no information indicating that our students are at risk. We are taking this step out of an abundance of caution to ensure the continued safety of our students and staff.

During this time, we ask that parents do not come to the school unless there is an urgent reason. Limiting traffic in and out of the building helps us maintain a secure environment.

We will continue to monitor the situation and remain in contact with local law enforcement. If conditions change, we will update you immediately.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

No Classes – Thursday, September 4, 2025

Posted Date: 9/03/25 (4:24 PM)

A red and black bear logo with a large letter 'B'.

Due to ongoing water service issues in the City of Baird, there will be no classes at Baird ISD tomorrow, Thursday, September 4, 2025.

The business office and campus offices will remain open. Athletic practices and games will continue as planned, and Coach Kirk will provide additional details and any schedule changes directly to students and families.

At this time, we expect classes to resume on Friday. We are monitoring the situation closely and will share any updates as soon as more information is available. Please watch for notifications on ParentSquare, our district website, and social media channels.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we work to keep students and staff safe.

Technology Tips

A cartoon hand holds a phone with social media icons, promoting the 'Hot Water Challenge'.

Hot Water Challenge - A Dangerous Prank

A dangerous online “prank” called the Hot Water Challenge has resurfaced, leading to serious injuries. In a recent case, a 12-year-old in Pennsylvania poured boiling water on his sleeping 9-year-old brother, causing severe burns and criminal charges. While some videos online may be staged, any prank involving real hot water can cause life-altering harm, or even death.

Parents and caregivers are urged to stay alert to online trends, monitor kids’ digital activity, and talk openly about why certain “challenges” are unsafe. Remind children that a quick laugh or social media post is never worth risking someone’s health or safety.
